Green Benefits of Anaerobic Digestion
The anaerobic digestion process can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in several ways by:
- Preventing the uncontrolled emissions of CH4 from landfill deposits. CH4 is about 22 times more dangerous to the environment than CO2.
- Helping to mitigate methane emissions from agriculture
- Reducing the transport of waste (‘waste miles’)
- Replacing highly energy-intensive manufactured mineral fertilizers with (liquid or solid) bio fertilizer
- Generating electricity and heat or cooling from a carbon neutral source and so
- Removing the dependency on fossil fuels
- Using the generated energy for its own operational demand
